Doctoral student in Chemistry

Läs mer Jun 26
Örebro University and the School of Science and Technology are looking for a doctoral student (PhD student) for the doctoral programme in Chemistry, concluding with a doctoral degree.
Start date: Fall 2026.
Project description
The doctoral student will be part of the research project COAST PFAS – Coastal PFAS Transition Lab for Source Control, Substitution and Governance, a transdisciplinary initiative addressing the spread of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from urban and industrial sources to coastal environments. The project combines environmental analytical chemistry, wastewater and stormwater research, process understanding, and systems perspectives to support preventive and sustainable PFAS management.
The PhD project is connected to the work package PFAS flows from land to sea, which focuses on identifying, mapping, and quantifying PFAS sources and transport pathways in urban water systems and coastal environments. The research will include targeted and non-targeted PFAS analysis in wastewater, stormwater, industrial effluents, and receiving waters. The research will also include the development of sector-specific PFAS fingerprints and mass-balance approaches.
The doctoral student will work with advanced analytical methods including LC-MS/MS, combustion ion chromatography, extractable organofluorine (EOF), oxidation methods for PFAS precursors, and high-resolution mass spectrometry for suspect and non-target screening. The work also includes interpretation of large analytical datasets and integration of results into source-tracking and fate-assessment frameworks.
The project is conducted in close collaboration between IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Chalmers University of Technology, Örebro University, VA SYD, and Malmö City. The doctoral student will be part of an interdisciplinary and international research environment involving analytical chemistry, environmental engineering, and sustainability research. The position involves collaboration with researchers and stakeholders across academia, industry, and the public sector, and parts of the research may therefore be conducted at different research institutions and partner organizations in Sweden and internationally. The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in field sampling campaigns, laboratory work, workshops, and collaborative research activities within the COAST PFAS Transition Lab.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by Leo Yeung (principal supervisor) and Felicia Fredriksson (assistant supervisor).

Project description
The PhD student will be affiliated with the Department of Computer Science and will carry on research within the field of cybersecurity for embodied AI.
While cybersecurity threats in AI are often studied in software-based environments, the physical embodiment of AI in robots and autonomous systems introduces new, largely unexplored risks and opportunities. This PhD project will investigate:
How embodiment and physical configuration affect the cybersecurity posture of AI-driven systems;
The role of self-awareness in security, i.e., how robots can assess their own vulnerabilities based on their embodiment and operational state;
How dynamic reconfiguration can enhance resilience, e.g., redistributing sensor reliance, modifying behaviour or adjusting control strategies in response to attacks.

Rather than relying solely on traditional security mechanisms, this research aims to explore how AI systems can proactively evaluate their own weak points and autonomously adapt to mitigate security risks.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by Dr. Alberto Giaretta (primary) and Professor Mauro Conti (secondary).

Doctoral student in Computer Science - Human-Swarm Interaction

Läs mer Jun 15
Örebro University and the School of Science and Technology are looking for a doctoral student (PhD student) for the doctoral programme in Computer Science, concluding with a doctoral degree.
Start date: September 1st 2026
Project description
The Center for Heterogeneous Adaptive Swarm Systems (CHASS) is a national research initiative funded by the Swedish Strategic Research Foundation (SSF). CHASS brings together leading Swedish research environments and industrial partners to develop adaptive, trustworthy, and heterogeneous drone swarms that can be designed, deployed, and operated as unified intelligent systems. The centre will develop the CHASS Swarm OS as an open software foundation for heterogeneous, self-governing swarms, and will validate research outcomes through integrated demonstrations in realistic use cases.
The project will investigate how humans and autonomous swarms can operate as joint socio-technical teams. The research will go beyond the conventional monitoring-and-intervention paradigm by enabling operators to interact with a swarm at the level of collective intent, roles, priorities, and operational constraints rather than through direct control of individual drones.

Postdoctoral researcher in Computer Science

Postdoktor/Postdoc
Läs mer Aug 10
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in Computer Science for a fixed-term 2-year position at the School of Science and Technology.
Subject area
The subject area for this position is Computer Science, with a focus on machine learning and signal processing applied to proprioceptive sensing.
Background
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to tackle a hard and impactful sensing problem: developing machine learning approaches for turning the vibration signals of mining machines into precise, bucket-by-bucket estimates of how finely rock has been fragmented underground, where cameras and conventional sensors struggle.
Crushing and grinding of ore in the mining sector accounts for roughly 3% of the global total electricity use. Better fragmentation data enables energy and efficiency gains across the entire production chain.
The position is funded by an industrial research project in collaboration with Epiroc and Boliden, funded by the Swedish Energy Agency (Impact Innovation, Swedish Metals & Minerals). The two main goals of the project are to advance proof-of-concept results for proprioceptive sensing toward a validated technology and to extend the capabilities of today's state-of-the-art methods to extracting a richer set of material characteristics from piled materials.
The position is associated with the Robot Navigation and Perception Lab which belongs to the Centre for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS) research environment and Örebro University’s AI, Robotics, and Cybersecurity center (ARC). We are an international team working with robotics and AI applied to real field conditions, and you will have access to real machines, real underground environments, and industrially relevant data, with a clear path from research to deployment.
Duties and responsibilities
The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills.
The position offers the opportunity to develop an independent research profile in machine learning and signal processing for proprioceptive sensing, within an active project on rock fragmentation estimation in mining. Building on proven results that estimate the average fragment size from machine vibration signals, the central research challenge is to recover the full distribution of fragment sizes — a substantially richer characterisation that would extend what proprioceptive sensing can deliver. The postdoctoral researcher will help shape how this problem is approached and develop and evaluate methods to address it.
There is further scope to investigate how fragmentation relates to material-handling efficiency, and how reliable estimation can run onboard equipment in operational settings, working with real data gathered together with industrial partners. The researcher will publish in peer-reviewed venues, present at scientific and industry conferences, and contribute to the wider research environment at AASS.
Qualifications
Those qualified for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher are applicants who at the time of appointment hold a doctoral degree or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree. Applicants with doctoral degrees that have been awarded no more than 3 years prior to the application deadline are to be considered first. The applicant may not previously have held a position as a postdoctoral researcher for more than one year in the same subject and at the same higher education institution. The position is for a term of at least 2 years initially but may be extended for a further 1 year. If the person during the period of employment has been on parental leave, the period of employment is to be extended by the corresponding number of days. The period of employment may also be extended in the event of absence due to illness.
